Dwight H. Green, who was inaugurated on January 13, 1941, is the second war Governor of Illinois in the present century. He is the thirtieth man to serve as Governor since 1818.

Governor Green, as head of the State government and chairman of the Illinois War Council, has placed all the power and resources of Illinois behind the nation's war effort. Since December 7, 1941, he has devoted practically all his time to war activities and has directed the State's Civilian Defense program.

Governor Green was born in Ligonier, Indiana, January 9, 1897, the son of Harry and Minnie Gerber Green. He attended grade schools and high school there, and entered Wabash College in 1915. He left college in May, 1917, to enlist in the United States Army and was commissioned a lieutenant.

After leaving the army, Governor Green attended Stanford University and later entered the University of Chicago, receiving his Ph.B. Degree in 1920. He was graduated from the University of Chicago law school in 1922.

Governor Green was admitted to the Illinois Bar the same year, and began practice in Chicago. In 1926, he joined the staff of the Bureau of Internal Revenue in Washington, and a year later returned to Chicago as special representative of the Bureau's general counsel.

Appointed as a special assistant to the United States District Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, he was assigned to the
prosecution of income tax fraud cases, and achieved national eminence by the conviction of some of America's most notorious gangsters. In 1932, he was appointed District Attorney, serving until he resigned in 1935 to resume private practice.


Governor Green was the Republican nominee for mayor of Chicago in 1939. In 1940 he won the Republican primary nomination for governor, and was elected Governor by a majority of approximately 250,000 votes.

Governor Green received honorary L. L. D. Degrees from Mac Murray College and Blackburn College in 1941. He is a member of the American, Federal, Illinois State and Chicago Bar Associations, the Legal Club of Chicago and Kappa Sigma and Phi Alpha Delta fraternities.

He is a member of the American Legion and of the Forty-and-Eight
Society, the Union League Club, the Chicago Athletic Association, the Saddle and Cycle Club, Knollwood Country Club and the Midday and Economic clubs in Chicago. He is a 33^rd degree Mason and a member of the Shrine.

Governor Green married Mabel Victoria Kingston of Washington June 20, 1926. They have two daughters, Nancy Kingston, born in 1927, and Gloria Kingston, born in 1931.
